The pride of Peshawar today is its
University, a vast sprawling garden town of red brick buildings
and velvet lawns, which comprises a dozen departments, and
Colleges of Law, Medicine, Engineering and Forestry.
On the road to the Khyber, where
no one was safe from tribal raids, today stretches a long line of
educational and research institutions, such as the Academy of
Rural Development, the Teachers' Training College, the North
Regional Laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial
Research, and many others.
Edwards College,
one of Pakistan's prestigious boarding schools, was founded in
1855 as the Sir Herbert Edwards Memorial School. It has splendid
Mughal-Gothic buildings replete with ornate cupolas, baubles and
pillars.
Islamia College,
which was the pioneer national institution that lighted the
torch of enlightenment in this region, 63 years ago. was founded
in 1913 to educate the sons of Pathan chiefs. if the elegant
Mughal-Gothic hall looks familiar, you may have noticed it on the
hundred-rupee note. The college formed the nucleus of the
University of Peshawar when it was founded in 1950. Various
research departments in the area include the Pakistan Islamia
College Academy for Rural Development and the Pakistan Forest
Institute.
