Swat
Swat, the enchanting land of magnificent
scenic beauty and rich historic past, is the holiday-makers delight.
Its lush-green, fertile valley; its towering
snowcapped mountains; its meandering river and rushing torrents,
its icy cold lakes, its fruit-laden orchards and its flower-filled
slopes are some of the gifts which
mother nature has bestowed on this ancient land. It is easily
accessible by road, 177 km (110 miles) from Peshawar. This is
the "Land of enthralling beauty" where
Alexander the Great fought and won some of his major battles before
crossing over to the plains of Northern Pakistan. This is the
sacred cradle of Buddhism where once flourished fourteen hundred
monasteries; this is also the historical land where Mahmood of
Ghazni, Babar and Akber the Great fought their fierce battles
preparatory to the conquest of the sub-continent.
Warsak Dam
24.1/2 km. (15 miles) away from
Peshawar is the 228 meters (750 feet) long and 71 meters (235
feet) high Warsak Dam, built on the river Kabul in 1955-60. It
has created a 42 km. (26 miles) long lake upstream of the dam,
which is a favorite picnic spot. This multipurpose dam supplies
water for irrigating Peshawar valley and generates 160,000 KW
of electricity. You can hire a taxi for the trip.
